THE HYPOCHONDRIAC

RECOMMENDED

Moliere’s The Imaginary Invalid gets trimmed down from three acts to a fast-moving fifty-minutes as Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre presents Roger K. Weiss’s The Hypochondriac, and thought results fall short of the brilliance of December’s A Christmas Carol, there are laughs aplenty to be had.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center proves that you don’t need a Broadway budget to give audiences their money’s worth, not with a show as crowd-pleasing as Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (one of the few musicals you can feel safe in inviting even your most Broadway-musical-phobic friends to for a monstrous good time), and not with performers as multi-talented as this production’s seven leads.

HOLDING THE MAN

110 IN THE SHADE

Director extraordinaire Richard Israel and an impressive cast of Los Angeles triple-threats have joined forces at Actors Co-op for an inspired intimate revival of 110 In The Shade, the 1963 Broadway musical adaptation of N. Richard Nash’s perennial favorite The Rainmaker.

When the legend in question is Oscar-nominated film icon Leslie (An American In Paris, Lili, Gigi, The L-Shaped Room, etc., etc., etc.) Caron, what becomes the legend most is a triumphant return to the stage in Richard Alfieri’s Six Dance Lessons In Six Weeks. Add to the equation six-time Ovation Award winner David Engel as Miss Caron’s onstage partner and what you have at the Laguna Playhouse is a production Broadway can only wish were on the Great White Way.
