Workplace tensions explode when the acquisition of an African-American-owned company by a major New York advertising agency adds racial sparks to already rampant sexism in Judith Leora’s scathingly funny World Premiere comedy Showpony, the latest from Burbank’s Victory Theatre Center.

Cassandra Marie Murphy and Caleb Shaw are sheer perfection as the star-crossed lovers of The Bridges Of Madison County, bringing composer-lyricist Jason Robert Brown’s and book writer Marsha Norman’s exquisite take on Robert James Waller’s novel to soaringly romantic life in an all too brief, just concluded three-performance-only Inland Valley Repertory Theatre run at Candlelight Pavilion.

GLORIA

The office banter amongst the millennials who toil for a New Yorker-style magazine in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s Gloria may be catty, querulous, gossipy, back-stabbing, and hilarious as all get-out, but the 33-year-old playwright has far more than edgy cable sitcom humor on his mind in his 2015 off-Broadway hit, a ripped-from-today’s-headlines gut-puncher of an Echo Theater Company West Coast Premiere.

THE RESCUED

Abuse survivors living in a group home would seem unlikely to inspire a comedy as sweet and touching and funny as Julie Marie Myatt’s The Rescued, but the Road Theatre Company’s latest World Premiere proves an utterly charming if still-a-bit-in-need-of-a polish gem.
