Anything Goes may be scaled down to fit the 339-seat Laurence Welk Resort Theatre, but no entertainment value has been stinted in bringing the perennial 1930s favorite to crowd-pleasing life at the Welk. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a pizzazzier Anything Goes than the one now being staged down Escondido way.

Glendale Centre Theatre opens its 2014 season (and celebrates six weeks of Grandparents’ Day) with an absolutely terrific revival of Joe DiPietro’s hilarious, heartstring-tugging Valentine to a quartet of Italian-American nonni any one of us would be lucky to call our own.

MOM’S GIFT

A ghost who can be seen by only a single living soul. An angel who must accomplish a mission before being given his or her wings. Playwright Phil Olson merges two tried-and-true genres to give L.A. audiences his latest, Mom’s Gift, a sort of Topper-meets-It’s A Wonderful Life dramedy that proves a crowd-pleaser in its World Premiere engagement for The Group Rep at North Hollywood’s Lonny Chapman Theatre.

MERRY F***IN’ CHRISTMAS, Y’ALL

THE MYSTERY PLAYS

Imaginative direction, terrific performances, and an ingenious production design add up to engrossing theater as The Visceral Company presents the pair of one-acts that playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has somewhat awkwardly fused together as The Mystery Plays.

THE SECRET GARDEN – THE MUSICAL

Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman’s Tony-winning The Secret Garden – The Musical has returned to The Chance Theater just in time for the holidays, terrific news for those as young as Mary Lennox, folks every bit as grown-up as gruff old gardener Ben Weatherstaff, and everyone in between.
