THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
posted on October 26th, 2014 at 2:21 PM by Steven Stanley
Queer Classics’ reinvention of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance Of Being Earnest, the Scenie-winning Hollywood Fringe Festival Production Of The Year, is back for a full-length run with almost all of its Comedic Ensemble Performance Of The Year cast intact—and if you’re any kind of Wilde fan (or simply want to enjoy ninety minutes of nonstop laughter), forget how many Earnests you’ve seen before and see this one. I repeat. See this one! (See it if it’s your first time too.)

THE DIVINERS
posted on October 26th, 2014 at 10:18 AM by Steven Stanley
It takes guts for a Christian-based theater company to take on a play as dark and as ultimately devastating as Jim Leonard, Jr.’s The Diviners. Then again Actors Co-op isn’t your Garden-Of Eden-Variety Christian-based theater company, and with a mostly God-fearing cast of characters plus a charismatic preacher man in crisis-of-faith mode, The Diviners fits quite neatly into the Co-op’s “The Story Is The Journey” 23rd season.

Sometimes the course a life takes can depend on something as inconsequential as a cell phone service provider, or so Abby and Ben discover in Ken Levine’s fascinating and funny romantic comedy A Or B?, now getting its World Premiere at the Falcon Theatre.

PREMEDITATION
posted on October 24th, 2014 at 4:53 PM by Steven Stanley
Style may not be everything in Evelina Fernández’s Premeditation, but it plays a big part in making the playwright-actor’s comédie noire (or comedia negra) the exhilaratingly theatrical experience it is, and with Premeditation currently Ovation Award-nominated for Best Production, Direction, and Lighting Design, theatergoers can rejoice at the Latino Theater Company’s decision to bring it back as part of the month-long Encuentro 2014 festival at downtown’s Los Angeles Theatre Center. Premeditation is as stylishly directed, performed, and designed a production as you’re likely to see this or any month—and that is saying something indeed.

LITTLE MAN
posted on October 18th, 2014 at 12:36 PM by Steven Stanley
The much-dreaded, much-anticipated gathering we call the High School Reunion would seem such a surefire source of comedy, drama, and audience empathy that it comes as a surprise how few films and plays have centered on this once-in-a-decade event. Playwright Bekah Brunstetter helps fill this gap in her highly enjoyable World Premiere dramedy Little Man, the latest from The Los Angeles New Court Theatre.

FLOYD COLLINS

USC’s Musical Theatre Repertory undertakes one of its most daunting projects to date in Adam Guettel and Tina Landau’s Floyd Collins, and if MTR’s latest entirely student performed, directed (by Victoria Pearlman), and designed production isn’t as thoroughly successful as many previous undertakings, some outstanding lead performances and a superb student orchestra are just two reasons to check it out.
