A single-engine Piper J-3 Cub airplane crashes in the New Hampshire woods, its two passengers soon arriving at the inexorable conclusion that neither is likely to survive the freezing winter night. Playwright-director Joshua Ravetch takes this incident and expands upon it in unexpected ways in One November Yankee, now getting its World Premiere production at North Hollywood’s NoHo Arts Center.

LA ZIZANIE AU CONSULAT (Mayhem At The Consulate)

The laughter has a distinctively Gallic flavor to it in Euro-Theatre’s production of La Zizanie Au Consulat (Mayhem At The Consulate), Jean-Louis Darville’s World Premiere French-language screwball comedy, debuting tonight at Hollywood’s Assistance League Theatre. Though last night’s preview seemed technically quite a ways from being ready for Opening Night, the English-subtitled* farce had this French-speaking reviewer laughing from start to finish, thanks to Darville’s silly but très amusant script and all-around sparkling performances from its cast of ten native French speakers.

What happens when you take an obscure direct-to-video movie from the ‘90s, adapt it as a stage comedy, edit it down from 86 minutes to a little over an hour, give it a new title and World Premiere it at Hollywood’s Theatre 68? The answer is 86’d, an enjoyable albeit slight (and very short) comedy that has quite a bit going for it … and against it as well.
