A hit Broadway show performed in the intimacy of a living-room for a lucky thirty invited guests is what the talented students of USC’s Musical Theatre Repertory are offering audiences in their 11th-season opener, [title of show], and it’s hard to imagine a better show to put on for friends and family than the 2004 Broadway gem, one which could easily have started its life in the living rooms of its writer-performers Jeff Bowen (music and lyrics) and Hunter Bell (book) and works every bit as well in USC Hillel’s “living room” as in a more traditionally theatrical setting.

Actors Co-op breathes fresh new life into Stephen Schwartz and Joseph Stein’s largely forgotten The Baker’s Wife, still a delicate, tuneful, très charmant gem of a musical some forty or so years after Angelinos first discovered it in a “pre-Broadway” tour that never quite made it to the Great White Way.

Big Fish The Musical may have floundered on Broadway two years back, but it’s the furthest thing from a flop given the emotional depth and heart of Steven Glaudini’s direction and the abundant pizzazz of Karl Warden’s choreography at Vista’s Moonlight Amphitheatre.

ASSASSINS

Haste is of the essence in catching Red Blanket Productions’ superb intimate stage revival of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Assassins, not simply because only weeks remain in what looks to be a sold-out run at the Pico Playhouse but because, if Actors Equity has its way, starting next June you will never again see such a 99-seat production in Los Angeles County. Ever. (More on that later.)
