THE MELODY LINGERS ON
Friday, February 18th, 2011RECOMMENDED
In his 101 years on this planet, Irving Berlin wrote somewhere between 1250 and 1450 songs, 850 of which make up Wikipedia’s “Best Of Berlin” list. From very early 20th Century standards like “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” to 1966’s “An Old Fashioned Wedding,” written for the 20th Anniversary Broadway revival of Annie Get Your Gun, Berlin’s music and lyrics are synonymous with American Musical Theater.

FOREVER PLAID
Sunday, January 16th, 2011
The Plaids of Forever Plaid are back, entertaining Glendale Centre Theatre audiences with their close-harmony vocals and amusing between-song patter in a 90-minute revue that couldn’t be a better choice for the retired seniors who make up the bulk of GCT audiences—and should prove entertaining to the under-65 set as well.

BROADWAY HOLIDAY
Friday, December 17th, 2010
From the opening bars of The Four Seasons’ “Oh What A Night,” it’s clear that the Geffen Playhouse’s December offering isn’t going to be your traditional Christmas revue. In fact, Broadway Holiday splits its songs almost equally between the two words of its title, its cast of five Great White Way vets serenading their Westwood audience with a baker’s dozen of Broadway’s Greatest Hits and about as many holiday favorites.

UPTOWN DOWNTOWN
Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010
Not quite two years ago, the legendary Leslie Uggams electrified audiences at the Pasadena Playhouse as the legendary Lena Horne in the award-winning bio-musical Stormy Weather. Sadly, less than a year later, the Pasadena Playhouse announced that it was closing its doors. Fast forward to November of 2010 and both Leslie and the Playhouse are back—reunited (and it feels so good) in Uptown Downtown, a two-hour nightclub act-like musical bio of Miss Uggams herself—and a fabulous evening of song it is!

HOBOKEN TO HOLLYWOOD
Friday, November 5th, 2010
Start spreading the news! There’s a new singing star on the horizon and his name is Luca Ellis.
Ellis’s cameo appearance in last December’s A Vegas Holiday! Songs From “Live At The Sahara” prompted this reviewer to describe the 21st Century crooner as “hearthrob-handsome” and “a vocal dead-ringer for Frank Sinatra.” These words ring truer than ever in Hoboken To Hollywood: A Journey Through The Great American Songbook, the exciting new musical production now playing at Santa Monica’s Edgemar Center For The Arts.

BOYS WILL BE BOYS
Saturday, October 16th, 2010
Boys Will Be Boys is Naked Boys Singing with a cast about half the size (no pun intended), a girl among the boys—and not a trace of nudity. If that sounds not at all like NBS, then think again. Both are musical revues filled with plenty of R-rated double entendre lyrics, both shows feature a young, attractive cast, both include a same sex love song (and a serious song or two thrown in for depth), and like Naked Boys Singing, Boys Will Be Boys is a heck of a lot of fun, even with clothes on.
