Get ready for the funniest (and filthiest) Christmas show in town. It’s Jeff Goode’s The Eight: Reindeer Monologues, now in its sixth consecutive year of shocking adults-only audiences into hysterical laughter at The Chance Theater in Anaheim Hills. What else would you expect from the writer of Poona The Fuckdog And Other Plays For Children? Like Poona, The Eight: Reindeer Monologues is definitely not for children.

SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL

Since Dr. Seuss’s very first children’s book, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street (written way back in 1937), kids have grown up with the good doctor. Who among us hasn’t read (or had read to us) Dr. Seuss classics like The Cat In The Hat, Horton Hears A Who, or Horton Hatches The Egg? With so many Dr. Seuss fans of all ages all over the planet, it’s no wonder that Dr. Seuss eventually made it to Broadway. Seussical (The Musical), with songs by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, debuted on the Great White Way in 2000 and since then has gone on to considerable success in regional and children’s theater companies across the country.

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS

The Grinch has been stealing Christmas for the past fifty-two years, ever since the now classic Dr. Seuss children’s book first hit the stands, yet who would have thought then that the curmudgeonly cave-dweller with a heart “two sizes too small” would go on to conquer the small screen (in a 1966 animated special featuring the voice of Boris Karloff as the Grinch), the big screen (Jim Carrey played the hairy Green One in 2000), and even Broadway (in musical theater form in 2006 and ’07)? Not even Dr. Seuss himself could have imagined such a future for his 1957 picture book.

THE NEW CENTURY

Paul Rudnick fans will be in gay theater heaven for the month of December as the playwright’s latest comedy, The New Century, gets its West Coast Premiere at San Diego’s Diversionary Theatre in a terrific production under the able direction of Igor Goldin.

A RUBICON FAMILY CHRISTMAS

A Rubicon Family Christmas is back for a second year with most of its sensational 2008 cast intact, good tidings indeed for Ventura residents and Angelinos alike. Even better news for those who saw and loved last December’s concert (but may have reservations about seeing it a second time) is that almost half its songs are new for 2009, making this hour-and-a-half of holiday favorites must-see Christmas entertainment for absolutely everyone in search of holiday cheer. Though L.A. stages will soon be filled with A Christmas Carols and holiday-themed comedies galore, the Rubicon is the place to go for music of the season, especially as performed by six of the finest musical theater talents the Southland has to offer.
