Branden Lee Roth puts his own engaging stamp on the title role of Open Fist Theatre Company’s Bat Boy: The Musical, his fortuitous arrival enabling the wild, weird, and wacky L.A.-born, off-Broadway-bred crowd-pleaser to extend its run at the Atwater Village Theatre.
The charismatic Roth captures both Edgar’s charm and his vulnerability, sings terrifically, and blends in seamlessly with fellow cast members who’ve been with the production since the get-go.
Robyn Roth remains off-kilter perfection as Meredith, Koulias’s Shelley is as deliciously on-the-edge-of-lunacy as ever, and Scott Mosenson continues to give us a Dr. Parker slowly unraveled by jealousy and resentment rather than the stock villain of previous Bat Boys.
Last but not least, understudies Delvin Harrington and Kelsey Kusintz have joined Bat Boy: The Musical’s all-around fabulous cast as Ron and Maggie in a production that more than merits both it unanimous rave reviews and its now extended run.
