ANNOUNCING THE 2013-2014 SCENIES
“There’s no theater in L.A.” “There’s only bad theater in L.A.” “There’s mostly bad theater in L.A.” “L.A. is not a theater town.” “Actors only do theater in L.A. to get an agent.” “Actors only do theater in L.A. when they can’t get a job in film or TV.” “L.A. theater production values are shoddy.” “L.A. theater is mostly vanity projects.” “Theater is an afterthought in L.A.” “L.A theater is visionless, self-serving, and/or middling.”
The myths and misconceptions about L.A. theater persist, whether by the uninformed or by those who ought to know better.
The Scenies are my way of shining a light on the truth—that theater in Los Angeles and its surrounding communities is alive and thriving and quite often simply as good as it gets.
Just how good is it?
Check out the following lists of the most memorable productions, performances, direction, choreography, musical direction, and designs I had the pleasure of reviewing over the past year and you will see how very much there is to celebrate in this world-class theater town.
Despite continuing economic challenges, fewer productions than in years past, and those pesky, persistent myths and misconceptions, L.A. theater is better than ever, a fact made abundantly clear by most of the 268 productions I reviewed from September 1, 2013 through August 31, 2014.
It is with great pride that Scenies 2013-2014 celebrate a year well worth remembering.
ELIGIBILITY: In the case of remounted productions, only persons not previously honored will be eligible for individual Scenie consideration. A performance in a previously honored role will not be eligible for a second Scenie. Re-creation of original Broadway direction or choreography will not be eligible for a Scenie when credited as such. In cases of double-cast roles or understudy performances, only those actors whose work I saw and reviewed are eligible for a Scenie.
Scenie Certificates are available as PDF files suitable for printing. Please send your request to Steven Stanley at
Scenies2014@gmail.com
(Only certificate requests by individual recipients or on behalf of a family member can be honored.)
