Judy Kaye is loveable perfection as Florence Foster Jenkins, the "opera star" who only thought she could sing. (Judy got a Tony nom for this one.) She is matched by her costar and accompanist Donald Corren.
I knew this show would be funny, and full of arias sung badly (I didn't know how badly) but I didn't expect it to be such a lovely piece of writing. This is a real play about two real people who were far more than they appeared to be on the surface. Kaye and Corren have great rapport, and develop a truly touching relationship, which develops over the years.
The final scene, where Miss Jenkins sings in Judy Kaye's glorious true voice, as she always heard herself in her mind's ear, will bring tears to the eyes of even the most hardened soul. OCTOBER 2006, BRENTWOOD THEATRE, WEST LOS ANGELES.
