Craig Lucas' fascinating and challenging backstage comedy-drama, currently at the Odyssey in West L.A. is brilliant theater, pure and simple, but also (like the continuing 1 to 10?), of special interest to actors and theater lovers.
The plot: A mixed bag of professional and amateur actors are putting on a new adaptation of Oedipus, and we follow their stories from the first auditions to the final production to the shocking aftermath.
There are hilarious moments, tense moments, sad moments...wonderfully directed by John Perrin Flynn and performed to perfection by an amazing ensemble including one of my favorite actors Bill Brochtrup (we're so lucky to have TV favorite Brochtrup once again gracing our stages) and 2005 Ovation Winner Deidrie Henry showing why she won Best Actress for Yellowman. Equally great are 2005 Ovation nominee Michael Redfield, Steve Cell, Hollace Starr, and Rochelle Greenwood.
Craig Lucas is one of the best playwrights around, and in a Lucas play, you know you're going on an unpredictable rollercoaster ride. Don't miss Small Tragedy. APRIL 2007, ODYSSEY THEATRE, WEST LOS ANGELES.
