Chromolume Theatre Company is alive and well and putting on their annual Sondheim show! It’s Merrily We Roll Along, directed here by Gary Romm, the bittersweet story of a three-way friendship gone sour, going backwards in time 1976 to 1957. The structure, and the show itself, are challenging to both the audience and the actors, but the results are poignant and powerful. Nathan Bouldin is a tall and striking presence as composer Franklin Shepard (=the brilliant Sondheim) and Andrew Block does fine work as lyricist Charley Kringas (=Sondheim’s brilliant other half). The very good Ellen Caranasos completes the trio as Mary, whose secret love for Franklin is the catalyst for the demise of these three’s friendship.
Musical director Richard Berent (at the piano) provides an excellent accompaniment for the three leads, and especially for the well sung ensemble numbers. In supporting roles, Aileen-Marie Scott brings Broadway star Gussie Carnegie to bold and brassy life, and lovely Rachel Rawlins Prescott is a standout as Franklin’s ex-wife Beth. The production features dozens of period costumes, and though not always period-accurate, they add vivid color to the show.
With so many scene changes, a simple set is often most appropriate for a musical; this production’s set is a bit too simple, but the important thing with a Sondheim show is the music (and the acting) and in this production’s case, both are solid. If you’re in the mood for some vintage Sondheim, Merrily We Roll Along is for you. Through August 12 at Theatre/Theater, 5041 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90019 Tickets: 323-938-3700
