I feel so fortunate to have seen three August Wilson plays in 2006. This one is set in the 70s (great polyester costumes!) and like Fences, concerns a complex father/son relationship. The performances by the entire ensemble are towering, especially James Ivory and Richard Brooks. Special kudos to master set/lighting designer Joel Daavid for transforming the Lilian into a detailed 70s jitney office and to Nanci Martin for her spot-on perfect polyester costumes. It's great to see a theater full of African American playgoers, but it's also great (thanks to Wilson's talent) to see how universal we are, regardless of race. NOVEMBER 2006, LILIAN THEATRE, HOLLYWOOD.
