Here are excerpts from a message I sent to writer/performer Steven Fales:
Dear Steven, I was in the audience for the first preview of Confessions of a Mormon Boy last Wednesday, and I wanted to tell you that the show and your performance exceeded my high expectations!
As a very frequent theater-goer, I've seen quite a few excellent solo performances. To write and perform your own script, and to reveal so much of yourself (let alone learning 90 minutes of script), it's an achievement that truly boggles my mind.
Confessions of a Mormon Boy is certainly one of the most powerful experiences I've had as a gay theater-goer, making me understand why it's especially hard for a gay Mormon to let go of the teachings of his church; I finally understood the literally blissful lives that Mormons can lead--providing that they're not gay. Though I still feel that (for me at least) the evil done to gays and lesbians outweighs the good this faith does for everyone else, Confessions of a Mormon Boy did make me see the LDS faith in a more positive light.
Reading some of the letters you've received (posted on your website) brought me to tears. Beyond the critical and public success you've achieved with Mormon Boy, to know that you have saved lives and brought families closer, what an gratifying feeling that must be! JANUARY 10, 2007, COAST PLAYHOUSE, WEST HOLLYWOOD.
