I saw a preview of Can Can at the Pasadena Playhouse tonight and I LOVED it! Spectacular dancing (huge applause for the big can can number), sensational singing, and hilarious comedy.
I love the new book which just keeps getting better and better as the show progresses. Act 2 is a lot more "intimate" than Act 1 (no production numbers) but there's a 2 part fencing scene that is pretty much a production number, starting slapstick funny and then becoming Errol Flynn exciting.
Kevin Earley is at his best in the kind of slightly awkward but debonair leading man role he does so well. Michelle Duffy is glorious. David Engel plays suave and dastardly very well, gorgeous Yvette Tucker leads a bevy of dancing beauties, and a funny funny actor named Amir Talai steals every scene he's in. In fact, the whole cast dazzles.
If you can can make it to the Pasadena Playhouse, do do! (Pardon my French!) Can-Can: Pasadena Playhouse, 39 S. El Molino Ave., Pasadena; 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 4 and 8 p.m. Saturdays, 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays. Ends: Aug. 5; Price: $47 to $71 (626) 356-PLAY
