Award winning playwright Richard Martin Hirsch (last year's superb The Quality of Light) proves his versality in this engrossing character study of a Jewish writer in crisis. A powerful performance by Michael Oberlander anchors this thought provoking drama (skillfully directed by Howard Teichman) which also features impassioned work by Imelda Corcoran, Meredith Bishop, and Susan Morgenstern. Unlike the linear Quality of Light, Atonement (which takes place in Oberlander's head) moves back and forth in time (shifts ably abetted by Ellen Monocroussos' lighting design). A play bound to provoke much post curtain discussion, Atonement is currently playing at Theatre 40 in Beverly Hills. I highly recommend it. MARCH 13, 2007, THEATRE 40, BEVERLY HILLS.
